Dysthymia Symptoms

Dysthymia also called minor depression is very much dangerous type of depression. Normally dysthymia is characterized by continuous or intermittent illness for about two years.  Although its more often in women yet it is as dangerous for males as for females. In this disease person’s  mood is changed and become more tired. Discouraging thoughts are always surrounding the person and these unwell behavior lasts for some time and then come back after some interval. Approximately two years intermittent lasting of this behavior confirms presence of dysthymia disorder.

Following is simplified list of symptoms of dysthymia which are common in many patients. Normllay two are more symptoms are always there in the patient.

  1. Energy level is extremely low.
  2. Sleep problems of any kind
  3. Changes in appetite leading to abnormal behaviour
  4. considerable decrease in level of self-esteem
  5. concentration dis-oreintation leading to no proper focus.
  6. sense of worthlessness and useless
  7. As can be expected mood of such a person is always sad
  8. Feeling of tiredness

 

Dysthymia or minor depression is very much harmful in a way that if not treated well it can lead to the development of Major Depressive Disorder. So it must be stopped at very first level to avoid any further harmful developments. According to some calculation around 10 ~ 12 % patients develop major depressive disorder too.

Dysthymia is devloped by presence of personality disorders. These personality disorders may be borderline, histrionic or avoidant. Its also present in children in the form of learning disorders, attention deficit, conduct disorder and mental problems.
